Beards: they grow on you
Uma das primeiras funções comunicativas que se aprende em curso de línguas é expressar que se gosta ou não se gosta de algo ou alguém. E isso é matéria para o curso inteiro, pois não faltam palavras para isso. É interminável a lista de verbos e expressões com a idéia de gostar (like; enjoy; fancy; love; adore; be keen on; be fond of; take to; be mad about; be crazy about; be addicted to; be hooked on; be very me; be my cup of tea; be into; have a weakness for; get a kick out of/from; relish; revel in; have a penchant for; go for; dig; etc.) e de não gostar (dislike; can’t bear; can’t stand; hate; detest; loathe; despise; not be my style; not really like; not be my thing; not be much of a fan of; be tired of; be sick (and tired) of; have had with; cannot put up with; can do without; annoy me; bug me; piss me off; drive me mad/crazy/up the wall; etc.)
E este ano nada menos que quatro expressões vieram se somar à minha lista, aqui seguidas por exemplos tirados do dicionário Cambridge Advanced Learner’s online [CAM] e do Longman Exams Dictionary [LON]:
- not do anything for sb/do nothing for sb: Chopin has never really done it/anything for me.[CAM]
- grow on sb: I wasn’t sure about this album when I bought it but it’s really grown on me. [CAM]
- warm (up) to sb: I wasn’t sure about Sarah at first, but I warmed to her after we’d been out together a few times. [CAM]
- cotton to sb/sth: I didn’t cotton to her at first, but she’s really nice. [LON] [American English, infml]
A primeira expressão tem o sentido de “desgostar”, mas também pode ser usada para “não ter o efeito (desejado)” (ex.: The colour does nothing for her. [LON]). As demais significam “passar/começar a gostar”, sendo que “warm (up) to” também quer dizer “ficar mais empolgado com um assunto, tema ou idéia” (ex.: Voters are starting to warm up to the idea. [LON]; Unfortunately, I had to leave just as the speaker was warming to his theme. [CAM]).

well.. I gotta a doubt about this expression ” beards: they grown on you” I read that “grown on sb” means you start liking something, but I just dont get beard pun.

Thank you, Pamela, for your kind words. I believe the pun derives from the expression “to grow a beard”. Also, a beard is something that literally grows (as in becomes bigger) on you.
